Representatives of the Academy of Justice Participate in Training on Alternative Dispute Resolution

On September 28–29, 2026, faculty members and staff of the Academy of Justice under the High Judicial Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan participated in a two-day Training of Trainers on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) conducted by the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The training was held online as part of the cooperation between the Academy of Justice and CLDP. Its main objective was to strengthen the professional competencies of the Academy’s faculty in the field of ADR, as well as to further integrate the knowledge gained and training materials into the Academy’s educational programs for the training and professional development of judges.

The program consisted of seven working sessions. On the first day, participants explored the foundations of ADR, including expert assistance, the judicial gatekeeping function, and the various roles of courts in ADR. Particular attention was given to judicial support for mediation, including mediation agreements, judicial referral to mediation, the mediation process, settlement agreements, the Singapore Convention, court-annexed mediation, mandatory and voluntary referral to mediation, as well as international and regional models.

The second day focused on judicial support for arbitration. Participants discussed arbitration agreements, court support for arbitration, the appointment and challenge of arbitrators, the jurisdiction of arbitral tribunals, evidence, and interim measures. The program also covered arbitration awards, transnational judicial dialogue, the use of international arbitral awards and case law from different jurisdictions in the application of arbitration legislation, as well as the role of bodies such as the Judicial Dispute Resolution Network.

The training was attended by faculty members of the Academy’s Scientific and Educational Center for Civil Law Disciplines – Ruslan Sultanov, Yerzhan Yegemberdiyev, Talgat Dossayev, and Aygul Assylbekova; Azamat Nurtan, faculty member of the Academy’s Scientific and Educational Center for State and Legal Disciplines; and Naziya Muratbek, Coordinator of Research and International Projects.

The training marked another step in the cooperation between the Academy of Justice and CLDP aimed at strengthening the Academy’s capacity in the training and professional development of judges in the field of alternative dispute resolution.
