In the period from October 23 to October 25, 2024, teachers of the Scientific and Educational Center for Criminal Law Disciplines A.A. Biyebaeva and B.R. Sembekova, coordinator of the Center of Academic Programs and Projects D.A. Mergenbayev took part in a training for trainers “Peculiarities of criminal proceedings with the participation of jurors”. The event was organized by the Legal Policy Research Center (LPRC) with the assistance of the British Embassy, the Academy of Law Enforcement Agencies under the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Academy of Justice under the High Judicial Council of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Thanks to lecturers, Candidate of Legal Sciences, academic Professor Gulnara Suleimenova, as well as consultant to the United Nations Educational and Research Institute, Criminal Justice Adviser in the Stabilization Unit of the British Government Nick Stanidge, the Training participants had the opportunity to delve deeply into the legal, organizational, tactical aspects of the administration of justice in cases involving jurors, compare classical and Kazakh models of jury trial.

At a time when the categories of criminal cases considered by a court with the participation of jurors are gradually expanding in our country, and the number of cases considered by such a court is growing every year (for example, in 2023 – 147 cases, in 8 months of 2024 – 169 cases), conducting such trainings will help lawyers (judges, the defense side to act more effectively within the framework of a jury-based justice system, which will further strengthen democratic principles in the administration of justice.
